SaaS is all the rage at the moment. More than just Salesforce.com, who have certainly made a successful SaaS business. Rather there are open source alternatives such as Sugar, where prices vary depending on the levels of service needed. Is this a paradigm shift?

It very well might be, why worry about having the latest software, why not access it as a service. How is microsoft responding? At the moment, my understanding is that they have not really engaged with the shifting business model.

what opportunities exist?

Loads, think about how you can replace the current locked in software that supports numerous business needs via new channels. I am sure if you search for it, you will find an open source alternative. Or even a reasonable subscription model that suits your business. Or if it does not yet exist, then there is the opportunity for you to go an create it
